Post-Westportif – Cool down after cycling in Westport

cycling westport introThe Westportif Cycling Challenge Weekend is a cycling challenge taking place in Westport on July 20th/21st 2013 with events for all levels of cyclists . On Sunday 21th The Adventure Islands offers you the best way to end your weekend and your stay in Westport: The Post-Westportif Cool Down.

As many of you will be aware, especially those taking part, Saturday 20th of July is an important day for Westport, Louisburgh, Leenane, Maamturk, Partry and all other areas along the route of the 2013 Westportif. For those unfamiliar with the event, the 'Westportif' is a competitive cycling event incorporated in part into the Great Western Greenway (new cycling route in Mayo) which begins and ends in Westport town, hence the former part of the name. 'Sportif' then as a standalone term denotes 'athleticism' (from a French word meaning 'athletic' or 'sporty'). 'Westportif' as a hybrid term is thus an adequate title for this very special occasion.

2013 is the first year of the competition. The event is the newest cycling event in Ireland to date. The race is open to everyone, even those who don't necessarily wish to compete, as there are alternate non-competitive routes such as the 'Ramble around the Reek' for those who wish to stay off the fast lane and take in the scenery at their own pace.

With the amenities available to cyclists in these areas, it is little wonder that in recent years other major cycling-combined events have taken place along these routes also, namely the very successful 'Sea to Summit' and 'Gaelforce' challenges, both of which are growing massively in popularity, year after year.

Cool Down after Westportif cycling challenge with The Adventure Island Westport

There is a lot of excitement in the air leading up to this event that will eventually culminate in the completion of the event itself and the Saturday night festivities and celebrations which will follow it, but the fun doesn't have to end there. This is because The Adventure Islands, Mayo's Premier Adventure Company has some very appealing options for you for the Sunday that will enable you to wind down from the months of hard training and preparation, and the massive amounts of energy spent completing the cycle itself.

Although we refer to our recreations as 'activities' in our literature and on our website, the truth is that not all of them require active physical exertion. In fact, some require no physical exertion at all. So, we have compiled a list of 'activities' which may be of interest to you on the Sunday which we have entitled, 'The Adventure Islands Post-Westportif Cool down'. The list is ordered starting with the least exerting and ending with what is only slightly exerting, but none are fully physically demanding as you will see.

  • Sea Safari @ Sea Base
  • Horse Trekking
  • Zorbing @ Land Base
  • Skyline @ Land Base
  • Beach BBQ @ Sea Base
  • Dinghy Sailing @ Sea Base
  • Archery @ Land Base
  • Laser Clay Pigeon Shooting @ Land Base
  • Sea Kayaking / Stand Up Paddleboarding @ Sea Base
  • Kitesurfing @ Sea Base
  • Sea Trampoline @ Sea Base
  • Snorkeling @ Sea Base

and for families . . .

Lets not forget that contestants and participants will not only be visiting these parts on an individual basis, many will come to the region accompanied by families, and for these groups in particular, it is important that there are events that will appeal to them also. So along with the above mentioned activities, we also offer activities that require a little more effort, and these can be done on any of the days preceding or following the cycling event. These activities are:

  • Waterskiing @ Sea Base
  • Abseiling
  • Raft Building @ Sea Base
  • Coasteering
  • Laser Combat Games @ Land Base
  • High Ropes Course (including the 'Leap of Faith' and 'Skyline') @ Land Base
  • Bike Hire
  • Island Guided Walks @ Sea Base
  • Rock Climbing
  • Surfing

If any of these activities (or a combination of them) appeal to you and/or members of your family, then the best thing to do is contact our operations director Catherine, who will give you the best deal possible on your recreations, especially if you can show that you have taken part in the Westportif, or that you are a family booking. You can contact Catherine directly on (098) 26907 or email her at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. Alternatively, if you are in Westport before the cycling competition itself, you can talk to us directly at our James St. Office located beside the Westport Tourist Office.

In closing, The Adventure Islands in Westport wish all the contestants of the Wesportif the very best of luck in the competition, and we hope to see some of you for the 'cool down' on Sunday.
